Embracing simplicity with a new take on custom entry functionality for Lowe’s.
ColorPro colorant software has a functionality that allows associates to process and create orders with custom color values. This affords customers the ability to order custom paint colorants that can be modified, even to the smallest degree. This study looks to expand on this functionality by improving it’s visual hierarchy.
This is part of a ColorPro deprecation series- where we slowly take pieces of existing functionality and transfer them to newly designed piece of software.
Existing Functionality
Today, ColorPro’s functionality asks associates to build a list of ingredients and enter complex colorant amount values all while shifting between different pieces of hardware. Associates reference the need to switch between mouse and keyboard as distracting when attempting to enter complex values,. They also noted that having to search the ingredient list field as an overwhelming scanning task given the nature of paint being a fast paced department.
Research Based Solution
Through an internal associate panel, we conducted a research session with 15 paint associates and found that associates were more efficient in entering custom color codes when they focused on a single piece of hardware (keyboard) at a time. This prototype resulted in fewer input mistakes and faster completion times.
Let’s break it down
This functional need derives from a specific request by customers - they want to reorder whatever custom color they previously ordered.
The associates role is to create a new order by referencing a label that houses unique color formulas. (as seen in the image)
The color code in the image is: “10-2Y46.75, 103-45.625”
